The Wakes Weeks Mural Commission – Deco Publique, closes 16 Feb

Deco Publique invites Expressions of Interest for The Wakes Week inspired Mural Commission

Deco Publique is an art and culture company based by the sea in Morecambe and working in and around the North.  They make public art that animates coastal spaces, rural landscapes and urban centres.

Their portfolio includes the National Festival of Making and Vintage by the Sea Festival; the commissioning programme – Art in Manufacturing; the co-design programme – The FOLD; and the co-production of landscape artworks, Headlands to Headspace.

Deco Publique will commission an artist to produce a mural exploring the heritage of The Wakes Week – a holiday period with a strong tradition of mill towns visiting Morecambe and other Lancashire towns, attracted by the healing powers of the sea.

They are seeking proposals which:

  • Explore the heritage themes whilst being visually contemporary in line with their aspiration to create vibrant public space.
  • Demonstrate the artist/collective’s experience in delivering large scale commissions and producing high quality outcomes with cultural and artistic credibility

The artist will use the thematic reference of The Wakes Week to inform the mural, which will highlight Morecambe as a contemporary destination and staycation location for Summer 2021 and beyond.

This is particularly prevalent in light of current and future travel restrictions – attracting visitors and promoting the resort’s natural beauty and seaside attractions.

As well as a mural, responses to the brief may include:

  • community engaged work
  • digital work that can be shared online
  • graphic posters and printed assets reference points can be seen in the tradition of 19th century posters

They are committed to encouraging diversity and eliminating discrimination. They encourage applications from all backgrounds and communities, and they are committed to working with people who identify with protected characteristics, diverse skills, experiences and abilities.

Budget: £4500 fixed fee (See inclusions and exclusions on the full brief)
